Lady Glencora

The true picture of life as it is, if it could be adequately painted, would show men what they are, and how they might rise, not, indeed, to perfection, but one step first, and then another on the ladder.

Phineas Finn

Summer Read 2012

Over the last couple of years we have been asking which Trollope you'd like to take on holiday. Following the success of the 2011 Summer Read of Barchester Towers, this August we will be reading your second choice - Phineas Finn.

Phineas Finn is the second in Trollope's Palliser series of novels, and for many one of his greatest. The novel's eponymous hero is a handsome Irish MP, newly arrvied in London. As Phineas starts his career he has difficult choices to make, both in politics and his love life. Alongside Phineas we are introduced to some of Trollope's greatest characters, Lady Laura Standish, Madame Max Goesler and Quintus Slide. We are also kept up to date with Plantagenet and Glencora Palliser's marriage and careers.

We are encouraging everyone to take Phineas Finn on holiday this August and to join in our discussion group on the Trollope Society's Facebook Page. We'd love to know what you think of the handsome Phineas, the beautiful Lady Laura and the odious Quintus Slide.
