Trollope and Ireland

Anthony Trollope left his job at the General Post Office in London in 1841 to become a surveyor's clerk in Ireland. Trollope spent 16 years in Ireland, progressing in his career, marrying and begining to write. In all Trollope wrote five Irish novels, showing his love of Ireland and the Irish.

The Irish Novels

The tour

In a remarkable ten day tour of Ireland members of The Trollope Society visited the places that Trollope lived and worked in during his stay in Ireland. The tour, organised by The Trollope Society, included members from the UK and the United States and was a memorable experience for all.

Visiting Banagher and Drumsna gave members of the society a real insight in to Trollope's world and provided a unforgettable experience of Ireland. Trollope's first novel, The Macdermots of Ballycloran, was written whilst Trollope lived in Banagher. The ruins of Ballycloran still exist, a forlorn and melancholy site, much as in Trollope's time. His first novel was bought wonderfully to life by the people of Drumsna, who produced a film of the book, and gave the visitors a wonderful reception.

The tour included the sites of Trollope's other five Irish novels, set throughout Ireland, including; The Cliffs of Moher, Cork, Clonmel, Dublin and Carrick on Shannon.
