Trollope knew his London, and even a superficial study of the names of his streets gives an outline of the London of his day.
What could have been more fitting than Carlton Terrace as the residence of the Duke of Omnium; or Park Lane as the location of Madame Goesler's house, to which an invitation was accounted an honor? Where could the Spotted Dog pub have been, if not on Liquorpond Street, and could there have been a better choice than Grosvenor Place for Augustus Melmotte to establish himself? It would be incredible that the Gazebees should live anywhere but in St. John's Wood, or for Tom Towers to live in any place but the Temple.
