Stanhope, The Rev. Dr. Vesey.

The Vicar of Crabtree Canonicorum in the diocese of Barchester, who had lived for many years in Italy on the salary derived from his neglected duties. He was recalled by Bishop Proudie at Mr. Slope's insistence, but when that dignitary was dismissed, Dr. Stanhope and his family drifted back to Italy.

"...the least singular and most estimable of them all and yet such good qualities as he possessed were all negative.... He was a goodlooking rather plethoric gentleman of about sixty years of age. His hair was snow white, very plentiful, and somewhat like wool of the finest description. His whiskers were very large and very white, and gave to his face the appearance of a benevolent sleepy old lion" - Barchester Towers
