Pateroff, Edouard, Count.

An old friend of Lord Ongar, to whom he falsely declared that he had been intimate with Lady Ongar. After Lord Ongar's death, he followed Lady Julia to England, declaring that it was her husband's wish that they should marry. He and his sister succeeded in making Lady Ongar's life miserable.

."He was a fair man, with a broad, fair face, and very light blue eyes; his forehead was low, but broad; he wore no whiskers, but bore on his lip a heavy moustache, which was not grey, but perfectly white.... He was well made, active and somewhat broad in the shoulders, though rather below the middle height. But for a certain case of manner which he possessed, accompanied by something of restlessness in his eye, anyone would have taken him for an Englishman" - The Claverings
