Mrs. Peacocke's first husband, a scoundrel who was believed to be dead, but who reappeared soon after his wife had married again. Having shown himself to her so that she could never be happy in her second marriage, but not wishing her for himself, he again disappeared, and shortly after died in San Francisco.
